The role of Registered Nursing (RN) prescriber is enabled through provincial legislation and professional regulation including standards and competencies. Employer policies and processes will also influence practice and this will be further examined in the clinical setting when students complete their practice experiences. Students wishing to be an RN prescribe should discuss with with their manager/employer.

Registration requirements and learning outcomes

NURS-1713: Assessment and Clinical Reasoning

Eligible for registered nurses' licensure in your jurisdiction.
  1. Complete a comprehensive health history for an adult patient.
  2. demonstrate the components of a physical examination.
  3. Describe the process of clinical reasoning.
  4. Review a general survey and mental examination.
  5. Review an assessment of the integument.
  6. Review an assessment of the neurological system
  7. Review an assessment of the head and neck.
  8. Review an assessment of the thorax and lungs.
  9. Review an assessment of the breasts and axillae.
  10. Review an assessment of the cardiovascular and peripheral vascular systems.
  11. Review an assessment of the abdomen.
  12. Review an assessment of the musculoskeletal.
  13. Review an assessment of the adult male and female genitalia and rectum.
  14. Adapt the techniques of health assessment for infants and children.

NURS-1714: Rational Drug Prescribing

Eligible for registered or psychiatric nurses' licensure in your jurisdiction.
  1. Describe the factors related to the safe use of drugs.
  2. Explain the concepts and processes of drug action.
  3. Examine the drugs affecting the central nervous system.
  4. Examine the drugs affecting the autonomic nervous system.
  5. Examine the drugs affecting the endocrine system.
  6. Examine the drugs used to treat infections.
  7. Examine the drugs affecting the respiratory system.
  8. Examine the drugs affecting the cardiovascular and renal system.
  9. Examine the drugs affecting the gastrointestinal system.

NURS-1715: Clinical Decision Making for RN Prescribers

  • Completion of NURS-1713 Assessment and Clinical Reasoning and NURS-1714 Rational Drug Prescribing. 
  • Licensed in a province with legislation enabling prescribing.
