Saskatchewan Polytechnic offers industry-recognized technical education in water and wastewater treatment through continuing education and distance courses. It’s an opportunity to get the technical training you need to apply for certification as an operator.

Operator certification preparation courses

kanātan nipīy (the water is clean) program

The kanātan nipīy (kaa-NAH-tan / nii-PEA) program is an opportunity for Indigenous people to gain essential skills and access employment opportunities in water treatment and distribution facilities. We are now accepting applications for the January 2026 intake.

Program outline:

  • Essential skills (one week)
  • Math, biology, chemistry preparation (two weeks)
  • Water Treatment and Distribution Training Level One (two weeks)
  • Wastewater Treatment and Collection Training Level One (two weeks)
  • Customized training options (one week)
  • Work experience (two weeks)

Admission requirements:

  • Grade 12 or GED/CAEC transcript
  • Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver’s License
  • Driver Abstract (within the last three months)
  • Resumé (includes three references)
  • Preference will be given to Indigenous applicants
  • Funding may be available for persons qualifying through referral from Saskatoon Tribal Council and Gabriel Dumont Institute Training & Development.
